Masks Gloves & Overalls (PPE) (continued)

These masks can help people who are allergic to animal dander; those who are hypoallergenic to animals often show symptoms in situations where animal skin cells and hair have become airborne, when inhaled by the person an allergic reaction is caused. Skin and hair can accumulate in large quantities, especially if the animal is confined to an enclosed area (like a stable or barn) and this sometimes creates an environment that can be irritating to a person’s respiratory system. Prolonged exposure to this environment can lower lung function and may lead to chronic bronchitis and heart or/and lung disorders.

The storing of plant-based material in a barn is a seemingly innocuous task, however moisture build up, combined with the crop’s residual heat, creates the perfect environment for mould and bacteria. Aside from animals ingesting mould, -which in itself causes many problems-, another issue is the inhalation of spores, which can have long term negative effects on a person’s health. Mould and bacteria release spores that can cause allergic reactions or even death. "Micropolyspora faeni" and "Thermoactinomyces vulgaris" are two types of bacteria, while “Aspergillus" is a mould; all three of these organisms release dangerous spores. These bacteria and fungi release damaging spores that can cause Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis - otherwise known as “Farmer’s Lung.” This deadly disease is caused by the inhalation of fungi and bacterial spores growing on crops harvested in rainy or wet weather. If wet or damp crops are left to self-dry, mould and bacteria may spread. Eventually the crop dries and becomes brittle; when infected hay breaks, it creates a fine dust, this dust can harbour microscopic spores that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, causing irritation to the alveoli leading to Farmer’s Lung.”

PPE Gloves are an important part of any medical professional or anyone dealing with animals, especially farm animals and horses. At Farm & Stable we have a varied selection of medical gloves, from nitrile to latex gloves. Our “Vetrol LX57 Latex Gloves” are specifically selected as being ideal for a wide range of veterinary procedures, offering excellent strength and durability, when compared to other materials such as vinyl. The latex material also offers greater strength than most other popular materials, including nitrile gloves (which are generally thicker to compensate) this is ideal for performing procedures where a sensitive touch is needed, such as when feeling for veins, inserting a cannula, taking blood, holding delicate objects or applying creams or poultices. Most importantly these gloves provide a protective barrier between the patient and the person administering the treatment. The use of latex gloves will help to limit the risk of cross contamination and offer exceptional bacterial barrier protection.

Here at Farm & Stable we also sell Nitrile gloves, which are generally thicker than their more durable and stronger (latex) counterparts. These are used for anybody who is allergic to latex, they are perfect for most procedures but are less effective in situations where a more sensitive touch is required

PPE gloves come in a range of sizes to fit the user, these range from: extra-small to extra-large. Farm & Stable also stocks arm length examination gloves, used when performing internal veterinary procedures on large animals; they are essential when carrying out artificial inseminations, vet inspections, foaling, calving or lambing. These gloves not only make it easier to perform these tasks, but they also create a protective barrier to stop cross contamination of disease and bacteria, essential for the safety of the user and the animal.
