Gamgee

Medical Gamgee is a layer of cotton wool between gauze, creating a soft and absorbent padding, generally used in post op dressings. Gamgee was developed as a highly absorbent and soft padding developed from two fabrics cotton wool and gauze. The traditional gauze provides structure and support; it surrounds the absorbent yet delicate cotton wool. This combination creates a highly absorbent dressing perfect for open wounds, minor cuts and abrasions. Medical Gamgee causes minimal discomfort to the animal whilst the structure of the material allows for quick and easy application, it is highly absorbent yet supportive and is essential in wound management.

Medical Gamgee has an added benefit of providing heat to the area of application. This insulation encourages circulation which has a range of benefits from lowering healing times to helping fight infection. Medical Gamgees’ effectively acts as a cushion protecting the area from external trauma cause by knocks and scrapes. (It is so effective as a padding it is even used just as padding for other would dressings) Gamgees are used for: highly exuding wounds, including leg ulcers, cavity wounds, lacerations and surgical wounds.

Applying a Gamgee dressing is designed to be very simple, they can easily be applied by people with minimal experience medical experience. Gamgee for horses is common as it is commonly used under items of clothing (such as horse boots) to provide extra comfort and padding.
