Yellow is the new green - How we made our catalogue more environmentally friendly

Yellow is the new green - How we made our catalogue more environmentally friendly

At Farm & Stable we are acutely aware that each and every business has a responsibility to protect the planet by adopting eco-friendly practices. We know that each step a business takes can collectively have a huge impact.

This year we have thought long and hard about how to reduce our environmental impact and, as we live in a digital age, we even asked the question ….do we need to print a catalogue at all?

While we are pleased to see some of our customers switch to go fully digital, we also respect that many of our customers love to use our catalogues as they feel they are an effective and easy browsing tool, even whilst out on the yard.

What is more, when our team are on the road, it is amazing how many Farm & Stable catalogues are used as a brilliant reference tool. Often the corners of pages with items that are regularly ordered are turned over and well-thumbed while the pages are often used for notes and scribbles too. We know our catalogues are used day in day out, so we knew that a printed catalogue still had a place and a need for our customers today.

So, as we concluded that a Farm & Stable catalogue was still needed, it became our goal to make our 2022 catalogue the most environmentally friendly catalogue we have ever produced.

Whilst we would like to use this opportunity to tell you all about the exciting look and feel of the latest catalogue, as well as all the new and updated products you can find in it, we would actually like to tell you even more about the changes we have made to make our print and making it more environmentally friendly, because this year ‘yellow is the new green’.

To start, we are using FSC® certified paper. FSC is an acronym for the Forest Stewardship Council, which is an independent, not-for-profit organization that was established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

The purpose of the FSC system is to provide an assurance that products such as wood and paper have been harvested in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Looking for an FSC designation is a great way to ensure that the company you are buying from is performing green printing. It should be noted that any printer can print on FSC certified paper, but only certified printers that are subject to annual audits and strict procedures may put the FSC logo on printed pieces. You can go to page 237 in our catalogue to see the certification sticker which ensures authenticity.

Once the greener catalogue was printed, we knew we needed to address the environmental cost of getting the catalogue to horse owners all over the country.

Initially, we have sorted data, updated mailing lists and tried to ensure our data is as accurate as possible – this ensures we get our catalogue into the right hands with the minimum returns and delivery footprint as possible.

Additionally, this year we are also making a conscious effort to reduce plastic waste. For that reason, every single one of our catalogues has been mailed in 100% compostable wraps.

The wrap looks and feels like plastic so it may leave you wondering…. would it really fully compost if you chucked it in the garden? The answer is yes, it really would!

Nevertheless, we do not advise you discard this wrap just anywhere. Instead, we encourage you to discard the wrap along with your other compostable waste, including vegetable peelings in a compost heap or compost bin – and we suspect a manure heap may also have the desired effect too, as long as you burry it a little to stop it blowing away.

Lastly, we wanted to see if we could redeem any of the environmental costs associated with our previous catalogue because, at the end of last year, we were faced with a number of catalogues that unfortunately never made it to customers.

Luckily, we have managed to recycle all the catalogues that we not used in 2021. We also used this as a learning opportunity and have since been very careful to only print a limited number of catalogues as to not be left with waste at the end of this year.

So, if you would like to get your hands on our most environmentally friendly catalogue yet.…before they run out – order yours HERE. Simply add a catalogue to your basket and we will not charge you for delivery either!
